Gerald carries the knowledge passed on to him by legendary bassists Ray Brown, Sam Jones, Ron Carter and Buster Williams and continues the legacy by conducting master classes throughout the U.S. and Europe. He taught at the Oberlin Conservatory in 2014, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee, the New School in New York and at Long Island University. He also gave a number of master classes at the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater and Eau Clair, at Emery University in Atlanta, Georgia and at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. Gerald was also a faculty member of the prestigious Conservatory of Maastricht, Holland.

After leaving Roy Hargrove, Gerald held the bass chair for legendary drummer Elvin Jones until his passing in 2004. Gerald considers his time spent with Mr. Jones a profound period of spiritual and creative growth. Since then, Gerald has worked with jazz heavy-weights Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Pat Martino, Louis Hayes and The Cannonball Legacy, Ernestine Anderson, Carmen Lundy, Abbey Lincoln, Gary Bartz, Joe Lovano, Cyrus Chestnut, Larry Willis, Dr. Eddie Henderson, Steve Turre, Eric Reed, the Dexter Gordon Legacy Ensemble and many other all-star combinations, as well as with his own quartet. He continues to conduct Master Classes around the world and remains the Musical Director for the McCoy Tyner Trio.

Gerald debuted as producer with the CD ‘Mad about the Boy’ featuring jazz vocalist Jeanne Gies. This recording includes the vocal rendition of Gerald’s original composition ‘Peri.’

The consummate sideman, Gerald has now stepped out front as a leader with the debut of his self-titled recording GERALD CANNON (Woodneck Records.) Along with stellar versions of well-loved standards, this recording spotlights Gerald’s critically acclaimed originals including ‘Little G’s Walk’ and ‘Jeanne’s Dream.’

Gerald’s creativity and passion is expressed not only in his music, but also in his painting. He recently had his first art showing in New York City and hosts exclusive viewings for interested art enthusiasts. A US tour of his paintings paired with musical selections will begin in 2016 and his highly anticipated sophomore album is underway with plans to release later next year.

Like the masters before him, Gerald Cannon has established a fearless, solid groove that distinguishes him as a principal figure in jazz. He will go down in history as a signature jazz bassist and composer of this century.

John Németh and The Blue Dreamers

Oct 3, 8:00pm - Oct 3, 11:00pm

The Jazz Estate
2423 N Murray Ave
Milwaukee, WI  53211 Map

Don’t try to snatch him back and hold him, he’s a man on the move. John Németh had already established himself among the very top ranks of blues musicians and modern soul singers when he decided to break the mold with his new record, FEELIN’ FREAKY. Németh fearlessly crushes all barriers of style and genre with an album of original songs that defies all the usual pigeonholes. Drawing from his strong influences in blues and R&B, as well as contemporary sounds in hip hop and rock & roll, John creates music that is personal as well as universal, and owes its origin to no one but John Németh. John’s songs are groove and melody-driven, laced with thoughtful lyrics and nuanced humor, and cover themes from social issues of gun violence and class values to the pure hedonistic joy of dancing, sexuality and marijuana. He creates his songs from melodies and phrases he draws from the sounds of life, from early-morning Memphis songbirds to the din of the city. For this album John brought his new songs to his great touring band, the Blue Dreamers – Danny Banks on drums, Matthew Wilson on bass and guitar, and Johnny Rhodes on guitar – so they could hone the groove and finish building the album as a group. Under the simpatico guidance of Grammy-nominated producer Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), FEELIN’ FREAKY emerges as a modern personal masterpiece.... See MoreSee Less

Christine Fawson Quartet

Christine Fawson Quartet

Oct 4, 8:30pm - Oct 4, 11:30pm

The Jazz Estate
2423 N Murray Ave
Milwaukee, WI  53211 Map

a singer who plays trumpet or a trumpeter who sings? Flip a coin. Fawson carries out both assignments to good effect on her new CD but, considering its title, Sings Jazz, she seems to bend toward to former. Whatever the case, this much can be affirmed: Fawson is a performer who must be seen as well as heard to be suitably appreciated, as her sunny personality can't be fully captured on an album, no matter how well-planned it may be.

In fact, hearing Fawson without seeing her can be a drawback, as what is readily seen onstage as enthusiasm can be construed on a recording as shouting, which happens here more than once. The same can't be said of her trumpet playing, which is well-disciplined and melodic. No more emphatic endorsement of that side of her artistry can be offered than to observe that she once sat in the trumpet section with DIVA, one of the premier orchestras—male or female—in the world. Fawson offers trumpet or flugelhorn solos on four of the album's nine selections and plays briefly (intro and conclusion) on two others. She sings on every number save the tasteful finale, Cole Porter's "Could It Be You," on which her flugelhorn is center stage throughout. That's one of four compositions by Porter with love as the over-arching theme: the others are "I Concentrate on You," "I Love You" and "What Is This Thing Called Love."

Besides singing and blowing her horn, Fawson apparently loves to scat, which she does respectably but without any conspicuous finesse on five numbers including a duet with David Scott on "I Love You." The scatting begins on the fast-moving opener, Dizzy Gillespie's well-traveled "A Night in Tunisia," and continues through the standards "I've Got the World on a String" and "It Might as Well Be Spring." After a brief respite (Sammy Cahn / Jimmy van Heusen's "The Second Time Around"), Fawson's trumpet introduces "I Concentrate on You," as it does "Fools Rush In" before Fawson sings and scats her way through "What Is This Thing." As Fawson has made singing / scatting the focal point of the album, a word about her voice, and that word is "okay." Not bad but, on the other hand, nothing remarkable either. She sings on key, as would be expected from a trumpeter, and has a decent range but keeps her ingenuous voice for the most part in mid-range and under control. Her upper register is respectable but slightly less persuasive.

Fawson, who now lives in New Mexico, recorded the album in Massachusetts with a splendid trio (Tim Ray, piano, arranger, first-rate soloist; Dave Zinno, bass; Casey Scheuerell, drums). For an encore, may we suggest Christine Fawson Plays Jazz?

Drums & Percussion: Dana Hall
Guitar: Lee Rothenberg
Bass: Dennis Carroll

A native of Stevens Point, WI, Typhanie is a performer, educator and recording artist whose three critically acclaimed, independently produced albums have captured the ears of Chicago Tribune jazz critic Howard Reich and thousands of dedicated fans. She has shared the stage and recorded with jazz’s elite, including Joe Lovano, Chris Potter, The Manhattan Transfer, Mavis Staples, Joel Frahm, Ken Peplowski, Victor Goines, Tony Monaco, Tom Kennedy, Dana Hall, and Ernie Adams. Her working quartet consists of Ben Lewis, Joshua Ramos, Dana Hall and Greg Artry.

A bold and engaging performer who exudes an aura of warmth, soul and charisma, Typhanie’s daring rhythmic ideas and unique improvisatory delivery place her in an elite class of vocalists. Equally at home with jazz, improvisation, pop, funk and R&B, she confidently defies any categorization whatsoever.

Typhanie’s long-awaited album CALL IT MAGIC reflects her focused passion as a vocalist and her hard-won maturity as a human being. Envisioned as a conversation and a journey, the album pairs jazz and pop standards with originals penned by Typhanie in a call-and-response of hard-hitting emotion and thoughtful reflection. Over the course of 10 tracks,Typhanie reveals her vocal depth and versatility as she transports listeners down the rough roads of love, struggle, heartbreak, acceptance and rebirth.

Featuring guest contributions from clarinetists Ken Peplowski and Victor Goines, B-3 organist Tony Monaco and tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm, CALL IT MAGIC was made with Grammy-recognized producer Jeff Levenson.

An in-demand educator and vocal coach, Monique served on the adjudication panel of the 2015 Thelonious Monk Vocal Jazz Competition. She has studied privately with leg- endary vocalists Bobby McFerrin, Shelia Jordan and the late Mark Murphy, and consid- ers herself a lifelong student of the art of singing.

“Monique has never lacked for stage presence or vocal audacity. … [The substantive scat singing she produced, the luscious lyric lines she unfolded and the ferocious rhythmic drive attested to the increasing stylistic breadth of her art.” —Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune“
“This is an album that’s been years—heck, decades—in the making. It’s where the road has taken her, and it’s a beautiful spot to take in the view. It’s music made with great thought, even more care and, yes, a little magic. That’s the artistry of Typhanie Monique.” Frank Alkyer, DownBeat

The Jazz Estate
2423 N Murray Ave
Milwaukee, WI  53211 Map

Vocals: Typhanie Monique
