Guitarist and composer Andrew Trim has been cultivating midwest roots since transplanting to Chicago from Denver in 2010. Currently residing in Milwaukee, he has played with many of the finest players in the region and has released 5 albums as a leader. His most recent releases include the sophomore album by his cross-cultural chamber jazz ensemble Hanami (The Only Way to Float Free, ears&eyes Records, hanami.bandcamp.com) and the debut studio album of his rock infused guitar trio Dim Lighting (Your Miniature Motion, Off music members, dimlighting.bandcamp.com).
A recipient of an individual artist grant in 2015 through the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs (DCASE), Trim’s work as a composer and leader has been praised by a variety of publications and critics. The resulting material of the grant was premiered at the 2015 Chicago Jazz Festival by his ensemble Hanami.
Critics have described Trim’s music as having a “potent mix of sonic fluency and cinematic ambiance” (Dave Sumner, Bird is the Worm) and labeled his group’s “patient approach” as “undeniably luxurious.” Trim’s guitar playing has also been singled out for its “lovely underwater guitar tone – which – softens the edges of his lines but retains a gentle bite.” (Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader).
Trim returns to The Jazz Estate leading a quintet of some of his favorite players in the region. This particular performance will feature some of Trim’s brand new original compositions as well as hand-picked selections of lesser performed material from the jazz cannon.
